![]() We'd say it worked, so the smiley can be considered a ‘discovery’ by computer scientists :-). He and fellow computer scientists chatted a lot through Usenet newsgroups, and they needed a way to differentiate jokes and sarcasm. The basic combinations for happy and sad – :-) and :-( – were invented in 1982 by Scott Fahlman from Carnegie Mellon University. Before we had emojis, we called them ‘smileys’ and ‘emoticons’. Over time, ‘.answers’ newsgroups like tv.answers, misc.answers, and sci.answers were added to collect the FAQs for cross-posting and easy access.Įmoticon: Your ability to substitute a bum for a peach can be traced back to Usenet. Not like Reddit or 4chan where FAQs can have static, ‘stickied’ posts. The premise back then was similar to what it is now, only FAQs had to be reposted frequently to avoid getting buried in discussions. The message: "Green Card Lottery – Final one?" A new kind of advertising had been born.įAQ: A website and message board staple, the 'Frequently Asked Questions' acronym was introduced by NASA and adopted by Usenet newsgroups early on. The firm posted in all of the Usenet newsgroups (a much more realistic feat in 1994) for its legal services relating to the green card lottery. ![]() The idea of Spam was first introduced en masse on Usenet in 1994 by the law firm Canter & Siegel. But today, it's the colloquial word for junk email advertising (and potentially still, physical junk mail advertising). Spam: Before the 90s, Spam was just a canned meat and a Monty Python reference. How many of these are you guilty of using? Many of the terms we use online and occasionally 'IRL' were first popularized in Usenet newsgroups. Usenet is home to many web culture references Its evolution reflects the dynamism of online communication and highlights how technological advancements and shifts in user demographics can shape the culture and functionality of digital platforms.ģ. While Usenet may no longer resemble its original form, it continues to be significant and an active platform for thousands of communities. The introduction of binary posts further expanded the range of articles available on Usenet. The influx of AOL users shifted the culture of Usenet, as academia was no longer the primary driving force behind its content and discussions. This move introduced a large number of non-academic users to Usenet, fundamentally expanding the user base. Usenet changed significantly in 1993 when AOL, a prominent internet service provider at the time, began offering Usenet access to its customers. Usenet quickly gained traction across college campuses and became a vital conduit for academic communication. In 1979, two graduate students at Duke University conceived Usenet as a means to exchange messages and files through a network with colleagues at UNC-Chapel Hill. The blurred-out locations had remained to be a mystery in the fandom for years until YouTuber LoopyGoopyG managed to get a full and unblurred graphic in 2017, revealing the locations. This map was designed around Februaccording to a design document. Many of the locations, via an extracted graphic would be blurred out, leading to many infamous rumors throughout the fandom. Only six of the neighborhoods were able to be released. The map with eight different neighborhoods were drawn and became the basis for the map in the Shticker Book. 2 - The game is finally released to the public. Also, a lot more Gameplay elements were implemented during the time. Unlike Beta 1, the game was much more stable and only lasted for one month. The game then was very unstable at the time and a lot of differences could be found. Early 2000 - Toontown Online begins development after the initial pitch.late 1999 - Disney's Toontown Online is pitched, as the second of the 20 MMORPG plan which would be approved. The project would be canned due to the movie not meeting the game's intended target audience. 1999 - Disney picks up the idea for the pitch, where they went with developing an MMROPG based on the in-progress movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire first due to high expectations. 1998-1999 - Jesse Schnell starts to create a pitch for an MMORPG, titled "The Massively Multiplayer Online Theme Park" which would have 20 MMORPGs in one. ![]() Also around the time of DisneyQuest's opening, Jesse Schnell started to focus on the idea of family-friendly MMORPGs because he was worried about the VR Studio closing down. June 1998 - Toon Tag opens at Epcot, Innovations East, which would be the basis of the game. Despite that, it still manages to have a following and some private servers to this very day. It had become one of the most famous MMORPGs of the 2000s in its breakout era, allowing for many updates to be released for the game's decade-long lifespan before it would abruptly close. It also had a rather enigmatic development phase which would be revealed by former staff that worked on this game, going through many different ambitious concepts before they were settled on.

The page includes a place to record the general weather plus high and low temperatures. He loves to check out the weather, so I imagine he will at least be diligent about recording that! Hopefully, now that he is more comfortable with writing, he will fill in the whole thing by himself. I asked Froggy if he wanted to do it again this year, and he said yes! So I printed out just the daily journal part – one copy for each day we’ll be away. But he was only 7, and he was pretty tired by the end of the day! ![]() And I ended up doing a lot of the writing. ![]() Okay, oftentimes, it took a lot of prompting by me. Most of that, I have to admit, we did not use!īut I am happy to say that we were pretty good about filling in our daily travel journal. I had maps to show where we’d be traveling, a place to collect post cards or other memories, a sheet for addresses, etc. Last year for our long stay in the Netherlands, I created a travel journal for Froggy. In my early years I attended many Ute and Navajo Pow-Wows and dance events and love the music of the deserts- the music of winds and strings make me feel at home. Here’s a version of Sunflower River Blues. This is from The Backporch Drifters release. Ragtime Ralph did a great version of Poor Boy Long Ways From Home that I just had to put on here. This was something I came up with just for Fahey Week. I've never played these tunes as a medley before. Then into the spiritual blues "Jesus is a Dying Bedmaker" (yes that's spelled Bedmaker. Starting with the Classical-influenced "Dvorak". It's almost as if it was all recorded in one sitting (maybe it was?) Like America the country, this album is a melting pot of influences from Country Blues to Classical to Appalachian Folk all tied together with one unified voice. One of the things I love about America is the consistent tone and mood throughout the entire work. Pat says: I decided to record a medley of tunes from my favorite Fahey album, America. Pat O’Connell’s contribution is called America Medley. Jim was more than happy to contribute an effort to the tribute, he lays down multiple instruments here on When the Catfish is in Bloom. Fahey songs by the faithful followers of the Takoma school of pickin' and grinin'. Well here we are at the end of the week and it's Fahey's b-day and you get the gifts. I count this night as one of the pinnacle experiences of my life. John had a big energy…there was a presence about him…something I haven’t felt from many people. Another thing that impressed me is that he gave people his full attention when speaking with him. He was such a good sport and signed all three for me, one after the other, as we spoke…he was so personable and charming. The only thing I could come up with were the tickets from the show which you see here, and a business card from a barbeque place in Denver. I’ve always been a bit of an autograph hound so I was digging around in my purse for something for him to write on. He spoke with us for about 20 minutes or so…wish I could remember more of what we talked about. I was so star struck that all I could manage to say was, “Wow that was really good!” as he shook my hand. After the show, we went over to tell John how much we loved the show. ![]() There were only about 30 people in attendance that night. I never experienced live music in such a personal way before and I remember distinctly getting chills as he played In Christ There Is No East Or West and Sunflower River Blues. ![]() My friend and I sat right smack in front of the small platform that served as a stage, roughly four feet from John. I had not heard of John Fahey before I saw him play at Conley’s Nostalgia on this night in 1986. What follows is Helen's recollection of that show. This show is listed in The John Fahey Handbook, Volume 2- on page 418, Appendix C. I can sure appreciate saving the ticket stubs all these years, I have a collection of all mine. I missed this show, I wasn't too hip to Fahey in 1986, too bad. It's always nice to hear from fans during Fahey Week, below is a memory and some great ticket stubs from a Fahey show right in my home town of Denver. ![]() Enter number of booklet sheets per booklet copyĬheck your printer manual for specific instructions.Select “Booklet” under page layout settings.Choose printer paper size (like A4 or Legal 8.5″ x 14″).When ready to print, open your document and select “File” > “Print”. There is obviously a trade-off associated with scale. And so if the actual building is 100 feet wide, your model would have to be 1 foot wide or it would not have the right proportions (it would either look too skinny or too squat compared to the real building). Now, this 1/100 ratio applies to all the dimensions in the model – not just the height. So a 1/100 scale simply means that your model of a 500 foot tall building would stand exactly 5 feet tall. ![]() The scale is just the relative size of your model compared to the actual building – expressed as a ratio. The first step is picking the scale that works best for the model. I am sure some people can pull it off but this approach is clearly a hit-or-miss for many others (which is the only way I can explain all the models I have seen that are badly out of proportion compared to the real building).īeing an engineer, I tend to rely on a more rigorous approach based on math (very simple math as it turns out) instead of using just my eyes and intuition. What exactly is involved in designing a LEGO model of a real skyscraper ? I wish I had a knack for doing it by eye – intuitively figuring out how wide (in terms of studs) and tall (in terms of brick heights) the model needs to be just by looking at pictures of the real building. I recommend choosing colors that match or complement the color palette you use on your site. In most cases you'll add CSS to your Squarespace site by going to Design > Custom CSS in the Style Editor. If, for example, you have an index page section in the Brine template named "grandma", the code would look like this: It works exactly the same as I outlined in the earlier post on CSS background patterns: just put the code in between the curly brackets that follow the page or block identifier. You'll need to identify the page or block you want to add the animated color gradient to. The main ones are the rule to govern the animation, the angles, and the background size. I use an animated color gradient as a background for a section on the Marksmen Studio homepage.Īdding an animated gradient background is similar to adding a gradient background that is not animated, except that we have to throw in some extra elements. Squarespace’s built-in Announcement Bar is a great way to give your website a little extra something when it comes to marketing, but it tends to be a bit boring. I chose to encourage Jules to commute, so the onus is on me. Forcing players to be complicit in their selfishness, albeit using narrative restrictions, causes them to feel responsible for the protagonist. Simply presenting a flawed, selfish character makes it harder for us to empathize, even if we can see ourselves reflected in them.
